Side effects to Fluzone vaccine are soreness at the injection site that can last up to 2 days, pain, and swelling; fever, fatigue, and muscular pain. Other side effects may occur. Fluzone vaccine should not be administered to anyone with a history of serious allergic reaction to any vaccine component, including eggs, egg products, or thimerosal (the only Fluzone vaccine product containing thimerosal is the multi-dose vial), or to persons who have been previously diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). If you notice any other problems or symptoms following vaccination, please contact your health-care professional immediately. Vaccination with Fluzone vaccine may not protect all individuals.
What are the risks of influenza vaccination?- Mild: If these problems occur, they usually begin soon after being vaccinated and last 1 to 2 days
- Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site
- Fever
- Aches
- Tiredness
- Severe: Life-threatening allergic reactions are very rare; these types of reactions usually occur within a few minutes or a few hours after vaccination
- Serious problems from influenza vaccines are rare; however, as with any vaccine, adverse reactions may occur
Characteristics of Fluzone vaccine
- Fluzone vaccine contains three inactivated (killed) influenza viruses: type A (H1N1), type A (H3N2), and type B.
- Fluzone vaccine is a split virus vaccine; this type of vaccine is generally associated with fewer adverse reactions in children
- Fluzone vaccine viruses are grown in chicken eggs and the final product contains small amounts of egg protein; therefore, it should not be given to anyone with hypersensivity to eggs or egg products
- Fluzone vaccine is available in both pediatric (0.25mL per dose) and adult (0.5mL per dose) formulations
- Fluzone vaccine is available with no thimerosal as a preservative (prefilled syringe) and with thimerosal as a preservative (multi-dose vial)
- All presentations of Fluzone vaccine are latex free
Dosage Information: Prefilled syringe, 0.25 mL, no preservative, pediatric dose, distinguished by
